Famous Speeches: John F. Kennedy’s “We Choose to go to the Moon”

“Many years ago the great British explorer George Mallory, who was to die on Mount Everest, was asked why did he want to climb it. He said, “Because it is there.”” is what John F. Kennedy said during his speech at the Rice University in Houston in response to the widely asked question, “Why go to space?”. He wants the United States to become the leaders in space exploration, hoping that obviate conflict, but to create peace with all countries involved because space is a hazard that they all that’s involved may have to face. In his speech he made the inference that we would be the leaders of space, and in present day, we are exactly that.

“Because it is there.” is what president Kennedy quoted from George Mallory, a British Explorer who was asked why climb Mt. Everest, when he was going to face death. It’s deeper than it looks because of the way we look at space now, like Mt. Everest. The quote helps Kennedy’s argument with why we should explore space. It’s human comportment.  curious creatures and we want to know everything, the most complex of things we want to figure out all come down to us just wanting to know what it is, a lot of the things we want to know aren’t necessary for survival. We may not defer the space exploration because at the time it was to compete with the Soviet Union. Now we look into space thinking “ca
n we colonize this planet?” or “what other life can we find out there in space?”

Seeing the technological advances we’re making at such a fast pace, kind of makes me feel bad for not being able to know exactly what may happen in the next hundred or so years with space exploration and what may be out in the galaxy and beyond. The best part about it is that the best part about it is that unless you want to be directly involved in it, for the most part every other citizen will be left impervious by what advancements we make in the distant future. Another really interesting thing I noticed was that in the near future there will end up being a sort of technology that will help viaduct the average man into space making it a common thing for eventually everyone to experience. Movies like Star Wars really make me wonder what the limits of what we can actually do in space. I doubt there would be any thing as drastic as actual wars in space, but the talk of using worm holes and all of the different space crafts.
